The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Abia State Sector Command has warned motorists against pestering bicycles cycling on Abia roads but must give them appropriate room and respect.
The warning was issued on Wednesday in Umuahia by the Sector Commander of FRSC in Abia State, Ngozi Ezeoma, during the celebration of United Nations World Cycling Day 2026.
She noted that cyclists struggle to get sufficient riding space on roads as they are either refused room or insulted by vehicles.
Ezeoma asked governors, local government chairmen and urban planners across the country to put the interest of cyclists first by ensuring that roads and the streets are not only created for the automobiles, but for the bicycle riders.
“The use of bicycle reduces air pollution and road congestion and promotes good health for the citizens,” Ezeoma remarked.
“Drivers need to give cyclists lots of room and need to respect and treat cyclists with courtesy.
“I also call on the state governments, LG chairmen, urban planners and development partners to make cycling-friendly infrastructure a priority as part of sustainable urban development and design streets for people, not just for cars,” the Abia FRSC Sector Commander stated.
However, she stressed bikers must respect traffic regulations, wear helmet and luminous clothes to be visible on the roadways.
Also, in his statement, Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu called Abia state population, especially the youths to embrace cycling as a mode of transportation, as a way to cut carbon emissions and to reduce dependence on fossil fuel.
